Fuel dwindles in Wrigley

Wrigley (Oct 28/05) - The tall tanks at Hardisty Petroleum contained only enough fuel to last for about five or six more days, Gabe Hardisty estimated on Monday.

The owner of the community's only fuel centre, Hardisty said four tanker trucks were due to arrive before the Fort Simpson ferry shut down last Thursday, but they never made it.

Despite being at only about 15 per cent of home heating fuel capacity, he said he wasn't getting nervous.

"I'm not very worried, I have confidence in the government. They can't let the community (run) dry," he said.

"Unless they have to bring the fuel in by Hercules (cargo plane) - that's going to cost a lot of money. It would be easier to open the ferry again."

Hardisty's optimism wasn't shared by everyone. Gaylene Oskenekisses, acting senior administrative officer in Wrigley, said some residents were quite concerned.

"Of course, everybody's talking about it," she said.

The Power Corp., on the other hand, had fuelled up prior to the ferry interruption so its generating station was in good shape.
