Yellowknife City Council Briefs:
Trailer park be gone

Yellowknife (Oct 26/05) - Residents of Forrest Drive Trailer Park are asking City Hall to change the name of their street.

The street's condo association petitioned the city to drop the "trailer" part because "trailer park" has a negative connotation, making it difficult for the street's residents to get insurance.

"It's unfortunate that that TV show got so popular," quipped Mayor Gord Van Tighem, referring to the program Trailer Park Boys.

Praise for Greenstone

A number of city councillors congratulated the federal government on the opening of the Greenstone building on Franklin Avenue, and praised the building's innovative and eye-catching design.

However, Councillors Kevin O'Reilly and Doug Witty said the feds had made a mistake in protocol by inviting only the mayor's office to the opening ceremony, and not the entire council. Witty also couldn't resist ribbing Ottawa about the structure's cost.

"Only the federal government could afford to spend $30 million on a four-storey building," he said.

Loose pins

Councillor Mark Heyck returned from the Union of Northern Workers convention, held in Yellowknife last weekend, with tales of loose Yellowknife pins.

The City hands out the free pins - little yellow-coloured knives - to visitors as part of their city information package.

Over the weekend Heyck noticed the backings of the pins have a tendency to fall off. He suggested the city change suppliers when it's time to order more.
