According to police, the man was known to them and had been living in town only a few months. Two people who had been sharing the apartment with the Grieve called an ambulance at approximately 4 p.m. Sunday, after finding him unconscious. The body was sent to Edmonton for autopsy. "We had the forensics crew up from Yellowknife to assist us with the investigation," said Inuvik detachment commander Sid Gray. "After talking to a number of witnesses and getting a handle on what he had been doing in the past 24 hours, we're fairly confident the death is not suspicious." Gray added that toxicology reports should determine the cause of death but he did not wish to speculate.
