The most Jennifer party in town

Yellowknife (Oct 14/05) - Yellowknife's Jens and Jennifers will honour their popular name with a party at the Black Knight pub this Saturday night.

"With winter coming, we need excuses for a party," said co-organizer Jen McKay. "This is about gathering the people who are fortunate or unfortunate enough to have Jennifer as their first name. That's what we Jens are like - always looking for something to organize."

The hosts encourage participants to come dressed as their favourite Jennifer - whether she's a celebrity, a next-door neighbour or even a boat.

"One of the qualities about Jens is that we're inclusive," McKay said.

The Jennifers will distribute name-tags and conduct polls to gauge opinion among their demographic.

Derived from the Welsh name Guinevere, Jennifer became popular in the 20th century after George Bernard Shaw used the name for a character in his 1906 play, The Doctor's Dilemma.

"I don't think any of us have met as many Jennifers in one place as we have in Yellowknife," party-planner Jenn Steidman said. "We hope this party will inspire the Mikes and Chris' to host a party of their own."

The event begins at 8 p.m.
