Offering more options

Pond Inlet (Oct 10/05) - More course options for students is the name of the game for Nasivvik high school principal David Parks.

"We are trying to offer courses that meet the needs of students," said Parks. "We are focusing on what students want to do after graduation."

Once Jordon Kyak graduates, he plans to take computer science courses at a post secondary institution to eventually land a job designing video games.

That means taking computer science and advanced math classes now. These are now available, but haven't always been.

"They are right there in front of you," said Kyak. The Grade 12 student is taking a general Grade 12 math class this term and will take the advanced version in the second term.

The school offers basic, general and advanced versions of core courses.

"The only way we can do this is if we have teachers who are flexible enough to teach two courses at once. And we have that here," said Parks.

Nativvik student Nubviya Palluq wants to attend Nunavut Sivuniksavut upon graduation, then study nursing to eventually work as a nurse in Pond Inlet.

She's now advancing in science and social studies to get her there. "Before coming to high school I thought it would be easy but when I got here I realized I needed to use my time wisely and study hard," said Palluq.
