Iqaluit (Oct 10/05) - Tommy Nuvaqiq will face a jury of his peers, if he goes to trial in connection with a brutal beating in Pangnirtung.

Nuvaqiq, charged with the attempted murder and sexual assault of a 31-year-old woman in June, was in an Iqaluit courtroom Oct. 4.

During the hearing, Nuvaqiq elected trial by judge and jury. He will return to court for a preliminary hearing on Nov. 15, which will decide if there's enough evidence to proceed to trial.

During a previous court date, the Crown attorney said there are "four bankers boxes" full of evidence to present.

According to the court, if Nuvaqiq is committed to trial, the case could be heard in Pangnirtung. There is a session of the Nunavut Court of Justice in Pangnirtung in mid-December.

Nuvaqiq is awaiting being held at the Baffin Correctional Centre in Iqaluit.

The victim of the attack is back home in New Waterford, Nova Scotia, taking physical and speech therapy to help recover from the attack.
