Gjoa Haven mayor named to Order of Canada

Gjoa Haven (Sep 05/05) - Mayor Uriash Puqiqnak was one of 82 Canadians named to the Order of Canada last week.

The renowned carver and territorial leader was honoured for his lifetime of political achievement done through safeguarding his ancestors, culture and way of life, said an order of Canada spokesperson.

Puqiqnak has spent much of his life gathering information on Inuit customs and knowledge to share with Canada. He is a founding member of the legislative assembly of Nunavut, the chair of the Nunavut Tourism Board, and a member of Parks Canada history steering committee.

The Order of Canada was established in 1967 to recognize Canadian's with outstanding achievements and lifetime service under their belts.

Other notable Canadians on the list are Steve Smith of the Red Green Show, honoured for achievements in arts and stage, and Jazz musician Diana Krall, honoured for her achievements in arts and music.
