Trial ordered in parole officer's death

Yellowknife (Sep 21/05) - Eli Ulayuk will stand trial on charges of murdering his parole officer, Louise Pargeter, almost a year ago.

Judge Brian Bruser decided Sept. 15 that crown lawyers John Cliffe and Sadie Bond presented enough evidence to commit Ulayuk for trial on a charge of first degree murder.

No date was set for the Supreme Court trial. Ulayuk was returned to the special handling unit in the Regional Reception Center at Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines, Quebec. A shaggy-haired Ulayuk sat quietly in the prisoner's box throughout the four-day inquiry, which picked up where it left off after being suspended in July.

A plain clothes police officer sat close by at all times. The case case is covered by a court-ordered publication ban.

Pargeter's body was found in a Range Lake apartment building last Oct. 6.

Ulayuk was arrested hours later, fleeing from police south along Highway 3.

Pargeter's death is the second time a Canadian parole officer has been killed while on duty. The first happened in a prison hostage situation in 1975.

Ulayuk earned full parole just months before Pargeter's death. His parole was revoked twice for what officials described as "violent and aggressive behaviour." The former Iglulik man served almost 10 years prison time in the death of Martha Ammag in 1988. He was released in 2000.
