Iqaluit (Sep 19/05) - Crown prosecutors in Iqaluit haven't ruled out appealing the long-term offender status of Mosesee "Cowboy" Nowdluk.
Nowdluk was designated as a long-term offender Sept. 8, which earned him an eight-year person sentence and 10 years of monitoring once he's released. The Crown sought a "dangerous offender" ruling for Nowdluk, which would have held him behind bars indefinitely.
All sentences are appealable, but the Crown hasn't decided whether to appeal yet, said Michael Jones, the Crown's acting regional director.
"Appeals are decided by a committee of Crown prosecutors. It would be appealable. All elements of a sentence are," said Jones.
The appeals group meets on an informal basis, but has 60 days to file an appeal.
