Courtroom packed for assault case

Yellowknife (Sep 19/05) - Crowds of supporters for the victim of an assault in Behcho Ko filled a Yellowknife courtroom to capacity to see the man accused in the case.

Gary Football, 28, appeared in Territorial court on charges of aggravated sexual assault, aggravated assault and forcible confinement on an unidentified woman in the small community.

The victim's identity and details of the assault are protected under a court-ordered publication ban.

Football appeared with his lawyer, James Brydon before Justice Robert Gorin in territorial criminal court.

He was sent back to the North Slave Correctional Centre until his next appearance Oct. 18.

The victim was flown to an Edmonton hospital after the assault and treated for injuries before returning to her community to recover.
