Yellowknife (Sep 16/05) - The Aurora Arts Society will present its second annual Arts Week from Sept. 24 to Oct. 2.

Art lovers and the culturally curious can pick up the new edition of the society's Arts Walk Map next week. It will be available for free at galleries around town. The map outlines a path around the city, with stops at artists' studios, public art installations and galleries.

During Arts Week, society volunteers will run a temporary visual arts gallery in the Centre Square Mall. Works of pottery, wicker basketry, photography, glass work, quilting, painting and drawing will be represented.

"It will be quite a nice blend," said volunteer Diane Mercredi. The gallery will open at noon hour and again from 5 to 6 p.m. on weekdays and over the weekends. There will be an open house on Sept. 24 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. A few more volunteers are still needed to staff the gallery.

Students from kindergarten through Grade 6 are encouraged to submit their work to the society's art contest this month. Parents and teachers can contact the society for details.

The society will hold its annual general meeting on Sept. 28. Both members and those interested in becoming members are welcome. A social gathering is scheduled from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at Northern United Place, followed by the meeting.

Artists are invited to bring some of their work to display.
