Yellowknife (Sep 14/05) - Around 100 people took part in the fetal alcohol spectrum disorder awareness walk on Sept. 9.

Carrying placards and wearing yellow vests the crowd walked from the Centre for Northern Families to the Salvation Army.

"It was absolutely excellent," said Jane Whyte, executive director for the Yellowknife Association for Community Living.

This was the second year for the walk and there were 10 times as many people out, Whyte said. The goal of the walk was to raise awareness about the seriousness of FASD in Yellowknife and the fact it is preventable.

At the Salvation Army, the walkers enjoyed a "breakFASD."

Wendy Bisaro, acting mayor, read a proclamation by the city declaring the day.

Other events included an information display in Centre Square Mall and a week-long children's colouring display.
