Yellowknife (Aug 08/05) - Nor-Art gallery manager Margaret Nazon is moving back home to Inuvik.

Margaret Nazon is leaving her position as manager of Nor-Art gallery in Yellowknife to teach art at Aurora College in Inuvik.

Aurora College has hired the textile artist to instruct courses in the new traditional arts certificate program, which begins later this month.

Nazon will teach the program's sewing module, covering basic stitching, sewing machine work and possibly embroidery.

She will lead a beadwork class and instruct students in approaches to product development. She will also teach her students how to create sale-quality art work.

Nazon said her work at Nor-Art in Yellowknife taught her a lot about proper presentation, including custom matting and framing flat pieces, and how to market artists and their work.

"I'm thankful for all I learned from the previous managers," she said.

Nazon's new work schedule will open up a few hours a week for her to resume her own art, she added.

She creates quilts and tapestries with landscapes created out of beads and cloth.

"I use fabric, thread and beads the way a painter uses paint," she said.

Delta workshops

Nazon may teach college workshops in other communities throughout the Beaufort-Delta, as well.

"Margaret was selected to instruct the program because of her wealth of experience," said Marja Van Nieuwenhuyzen, chair of community programs for the college. "We're looking forward to getting her back home."

Assistant manager Della Green will take over as gallery manager at Nor-Art.
