Yellowknife (Aug 31/05) - Think pink, Yellowknife. Run for Our Lives organizers are counting on it.
They have hopped on the rubber bracelet bandwagon to raise funds for cancer, says Leslie Straker, a volunteer organizer for the Oct.2 run.
About 1,000 rubber bracelets - made popular by Tour de France winner and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong - have been purchased to support this year's run and its new name.
"The main purpose is to promote the new name for the run," which was formerly known as Run for the Cure, Straker said.
The annual run, sponsored by CIBC, usually attracts more than 1,000 participants in Yellowknife.
There is the choice of lacing up for a three, five or 10 kilometre walk or run.
Straker said all the money raised by the run will stay in the North for breast cancer support, projects and equipment.
Last year, the run raised about $200,000, she said.
The run has a hotline telephone number - 669-7385, and bracelets will be available for sale throughout Yellowknife.
