Yellowknife (Aug 24/05) - Yellowknife's newest spies are ready for action. But they aren't your typical espionage agents.

They are youth who have just finished their summer in Yellowknife public library's Undercover Reader program.

Jennifer Vane led the program, which consisted of various spy-related themes each week.

Vane said the children chose books to learn about the shady world of espionage.

Children from ages three to 12 participated in missions throughout the summer, with an average of 30 per session.

"The older kids like to read Encyclopedia Brown, which are short stories where they have to solve the mysteries," Vane said.

"And with the crafts, they've been really using their imaginations and coming up with great things."

Emma Welsh, 11, said of her favourite part was writing "secret messages we could paint over. It was really cool."

For Faline Stewart, 9, craft-making was a special time during the spy missions.

"When I grow older, all these crafts will be my memories, so I think doing this program is very nice to remember," Stewart said.
