Yellowknife (Aug 24/05) - A Yellowknife man who spent the last few days scouring Yellowknife for his missing dog has been re-united with the pet.

Brett Olsen said Ernie, a pug, was taken Sunday afternoon from outside the Morrison Drive home he was renovating on Sunday afternoon.

Olsen said he was working inside when the dog got out.

When he noticed Ernie was missing, he went outside and found some neighbourhood children who said they were playing with him.

According to Olsen, the children said a woman in a dark coloured pickup took the dog, saying it was hers.

Olsen and his wife called RCMP and the SPCA and spent Tuesday putting up reward posters.

The effort paid off.

On Tuesday, shortly before 4:30 p.m., Olsen said he received a call from a woman who said she had Ernie and wanted to collect the $250 reward.

"It's fantastic. It's a huge relief," Olsen said.

He and RCMP Const. Maria Williams went to a home in Ndilo to get Ernie.

Olsen said he became suspicious when the woman told him how she found the dog.

He said he refused to pay the reward.

Last night Olsen and his wife were happy to have Ernie home safe and sound.

"He's the first dog I've ever had. He's the only one who can make me laugh just by looking at him," Olsen said.

Now that the ordeal is over, he is going to be a little more careful with his pet.

"What bothers me now is the paranoia that I can't leave the dog unattended."
