Golfers shoot narwhals instead of birdies

Arctic Bay (Aug 22/05) - Golfers in Arctic Bay were shooting more than eagles, birdies and bogies recently. They were going after narwhals.

During a recent game on the nine holes by Victor Bay, one lucky golfer ended up with a narwhal.

"We play golf on the beach area, that's when we noticed there were narwhals in front of us," said Daniel Aola, who was golfing with several others at the time.

"I had to go back home to get my rifle," said Jack Willie, who ended up shooting one narwhal and bringing it home before returning to the course.

"We finished our golf game after the narwhals left," Willie said, "I ended up losing."

He didn't mind the loss, because he says hunting is more important.

With some help from community members, like Simon Qamanirq and Koonark Anoogoo, it took about an hour to butcher the narwhal.

"It's already been shared around the community," he said last Tuesday.

Photographer and golfer Thomas Levi sums it up nicely.

"Tiger Woods and Mike Weir might have their green jackets, their trophies and million dollar sponsors to brag about, but they can't and never will say, 'while I was golfing I ended up catching an 18 foot narwhal.' Only in Arctic Bay."
