Baker Lake (Aug 22/05) - Winning a new Honda ATV brought tears of joy to a family in Baker Lake earlier this month.
Terry Nukik, 33, had his name selected for the new ATV in the Fly, Read and Win contest sponsored by Kivalliq (Keewatin) Air and Kivalliq News.
Nukik said the power of prayer helped him win the machine, which he described as a genuine Godsend to his family.
He said he's always working on his dad's ATV, but no matter how much time he puts into it, the machine keeps breaking down on him.
To him, winning an ATV his family was so badly in need of proves God does answer prayers.
"Winning this machine is also pretty neat because I'm a regular reader of Kivalliq News," said Nukik.
"I look forward to seeing it every week because I like to know what's going on in the Kivalliq.
"I've entered just about every contest the newspaper ran in previous years and never won anything, but this time I won through prayer."
The airlines' Northern base manager, John McFee, said he was quite happy with the response to the contest the company received.
He said the airline has held similar contests in the past and all have gone over well.
"We're absolutely thrilled that, through the luck of the draw, the new machine is going to somebody who can really use it," said McFee.
"This family obviously has a need for a new machine and we look forward to bringing it to them.
"We're looking at holding a similar contest next summer because the response we got to this one was so fantastic.
"We were very encouraged by it."
Nukik said there's also a touch of irony in his contest win.
The newest member of his family was featured in Kivalliq News this past month when his girlfriend, Suzanne Partridge, gave birth to their second child in the washroom at the Inuit Centre in Winnipeg ("Special, surprise delivery," July 13).
"We'll be running lots of errands with two kids now, so we'll put the ATV to good use."
