Art show on the road

Inuvik (Aug 01/05) - A student art show put on by Inuvik's Samuel Hearne secondary school instructor Brian McEvoy and his students was such a hit at the Great Northern Arts Festival, they've taken it on the road.

Nor-Art International Gallery in Yellowknife is exhibiting the students' work this week. Manager Margaret Nazon saw the art at the July festival and invited the students to share their work with a wider audience.

"I'm always attracted to the work of young artists," she said.

The students' unique geometric designs and bright colours appealed to her, she said.

It's not the first exhibit of student art at the gallery. Nor-Art presented a display of pictures and masks created by students from Chief Jimmy Bruneau school in Rae-Edzo last winter.

"I thought it was time to feature work from another school," she said. "We want to encourage other schools to display their work."

More than 20 pieces, made in class by Grade 7-12 students from Samuel Hearne, are included in the display. Most of the art is done in coloured pencils, felt markers and pastels.

The pieces are not for sale.
