Girl hit by vehicle, police eye charges

Yellowknife (Aug 19/05) - A driver could face criminal charges following an accident last week that left a 15-year-old girl in hospital with serious injuries.

"The investigator is looking into the actions of the driver," RCMP Sgt. Darcy Fleury said Wednesday. "That process is not quite complete."

The girl was struck while walking along Kam Lake Boulevard in the early morning hours of Aug. 6.

She was rushed to Stanton Territorial Hospital with what Fleury called "serious" injuries.

The girl spent about a week in hospital recovering from the crash, said Donna Allen, director of patient care.

Fleury said alcohol was not a factor in the accident, though police are looking into whether the driver - who remained at the scene - was speeding. He declined to release the details of the crash while the police investigation is ongoing.

Another pedestrian who was walking with the girl was also taken to hospital, though his injuries were less serious. Fleury said the man was in his 20s.

The investigation will likely be completed within the next couple of weeks, Fleury said.
