Women assaulted in home invasion

Rankin Inlet (Aug 17/05) - Four people have been charged after two females and a 12-year-old boy were assaulted in a Rankin Inlet home during the early morning hours of Aug. 6.

Const. Sean O'Brien said the RCMP responded to a call of a home invasion at about 7 a.m. to find two female victims badly beaten.

O'Brien said the RCMP's investigation revealed the first female victim opened her door for two female suspects and was subsequently beaten unconscious.

He said the second victim was then assaulted while she slept, and the boy assaulted when he tried to intervene and stop the attack.

"The suspects left when the youth ran to a neighbour's house to call police," said O'Brien. "The two female suspects returned minutes later, accompanied by two males, to find one of the victims had managed to lock the door.

"A window was broken and all four suspects entered the residence.

"Once inside, it is alleged the two males sexually assaulted the victim who had previously been knocked unconscious."

Charges laid

Police apprehended the four suspects shortly after the incident and took them into custody without incident. The victims were treated for their injuries at the local health centre and released later that day.

Ujaralaaq Eno, 23, and Amy Kaludjak, 19, have been charged with assault causing bodily harm and break and enter.

Gary Sigurdson, 27, and Jonathan Kaludjak, 21, have been charged with sexual assault and break and enter.

All four will make their first court appearance in Rankin on Oct. 31. In an effort to ease tension between the families involved, the RCMP are not releasing the names of the victims at this time.

Could have been worse

O'Brien said the four charged exercised their right to not make a statement to police regarding the incident, which he said could have been far more severe.

"The two female victims were banged up pretty good, with severe bruising on their faces.

"Fortunately nobody was seriously hurt, even though it will probably take weeks for their bruises to heal.

"Generally speaking, you could kill somebody that way - by kicking them while they're asleep, or kicking them in the head while they're unconscious.

"The victims in this case are lucky the damage is not as serious as it could have been."
