Karen's summer market over

Yellowknife (Aug 17/05) - The summer market at Karen's General Store is over and likely won't be returning next year.

The Kam Lake market ran for two weekends in June but stopped due to lack of interest from vendors and customers, said Karen Guinan.

"It was never really announced whether the city or the Chamber of Commerce was going to go ahead with their market, and that caused some confusion," she said. "It was too late for our market."

Earlier this summer the idea of a Saturday public market in the City Hall parking lot was floated around by the city and chamber.

While a public market didn't materialize this summer, the idea hasn't been scrapped for next year.

But after spending a lot of time and money on advertising, Karen's market won't run again unless there is "significant" interest, she said.

Karen's General Store still has booths available for vendors, and is offering various workshops this fall, including scrapbooking and knitting.
