Rankin Inlet (Aug 15/05) - Two women were assaulted during a violent home invasion in Rankin Inlet in the early morning hours of Aug. 6.

A 12-year-old boy was also assaulted during the incident.

Const. Sean O'Brien said the RCMP were called to a home at about 7 a.m. to find two women with severe bruising on their faces.

RCMP were told the first female victim opened her door for two female suspects and was subsequently beaten unconscious.

He said the second victim was then assaulted while she slept. The boy was assaulted when he tried to stop the attack.

"The suspects left when the youth ran to a neighbour's house to call police," said O'Brien.

"The two female suspects returned minutes later, accompanied by two males, to find one of the victims had managed to lock the door.

"A window was broken and all four suspects entered the residence.

"Once inside, it is alleged the two males sexually assaulted the victim who had previously been knocked unconscious."

The women were treated for their injuries at the Rankin Health Centre and released later that day.

Ujaralaaq Eno, 23, and Amy Kaludjak, 19, have been charged with assault causing bodily harm and break and enter.

Gary Sigurdson, 27, and Jonathan Kaludjak, 21, have been charged with sexual assault and break and enter.

The four were released and will make their first court appearance in Rankin on Oct. 31.

O'Brien said police cannot release any further information before the case is heard in court.

"The four who were charged refused to give the police a statement, which is totally within their rights, so we proceed on the information we have and let the judge decide the outcome.

"I can say this could easily have turned into an even worse situation than it was.

"The intent was serious. These two victims got beaten up and the amount of damage done to them was significant."

Rumours swirl

O'Brien said police realize rumours surrounding the incident are rampant within the community.

He cautioned people not to put too much stock in what they hear until all the facts come out in court.

"Sexual assault is an assault of a sexual nature, which doesn't necessarily mean someone was stripped naked and intercourse took place.

"If someone is simply touched in a sexual manner or nature, then it's termed a sexual assault."
