Murder hearing set for September

Yellowknife (Aug 10/05) - The preliminary hearing for a Yellowknife man accused of killing his parole officer will continue in September, lawyers confirmed last week.

Eli Ulayuk has been in custody since last October when police discovered the body of parole officer Louise Pargeter in a Range Lake apartment building.

Ulayuk, who according to media reports from the time was arrested while fleeing along Highway 3, was charged with first degree murder. His preliminary hearing began in late June and included nearly 30 Crown witnesses.

The hearing, which determines whether Ulayuk will stand trial in Supreme Court, was suspended in July - nearly three weeks after it began.

A standard publication ban prevents reporting details from the hearing and other evidence from court files.

Last Tuesday morning Crown and defence lawyers appeared in territorial court to confirm the preliminary hearing will continue Sept. 12.

Ulayuk was not present for the brief hearing.
