Council Briefs:
Twin Pine Hill deferred

Yellowknife (July 29/05) - A public meeting to define the area at Twin Pine Hill where a hotel and conference centre is to be built has been deferred to late August.

City council decided to wait on the issue to address two email submissions from residents Bob Bromley and Lesley Singer regarding the lot changes.

The meeting was called to amend a zoning bylaw for the site to reflect final surveys of the land, according to city clerk Debbie Euchner.

Yellowknife River Resorts has been promising to start construction on the $25 million resort since 2003. They cited technical difficulties for the delay in 2004. The bylaw change will wait until the next council meeting Aug. 22.

RV campground on the way

Motorhome visitors hitting the road to come North may have a new powered park to camp at soon.

City council passed two readings of a by-law to lease land at the old Rocking Horse Ranch, about 10 km out of town on the road to Rae, to the department of Industry, Tourism and Investment. The department is seeking a 30-year lease to offer to a private operator for the Recreational Vehicle campground.

If the decision is passed in late August, the campground could be up and running by the summer of 2007.

Money raising time

The NWT Mining Heritage Society can start thinking about raising money to renovate the old recreation hall at Giant Mine.

City council passed first reading to award a 10-year lease on the land to the society. They plan on turning the hall into a mining museum and interpretive centre.

If the final approval goes through at the next council meeting in August, the society plans to raise $200,000 to renovate the building.

Walt Humphries, president of the society, hopes to open the museum to the public next summer.
