Tlicho residents await homes

Northern News Services

Yellowknife (June 20/05) - Asked what his community needs, Dominic Grosco of Wha Ti listed social programs and housing.

"People don't have anyone to turn to for the community. There's nothing for the kids. Once business hours are done, that's it.

"Housing is another big problem. Lots of people are waiting. I believe there are five houses coming this year but we need 10 or 12."

Lena Adzin of Rae-Edzo wants "places for kids to play, and places for teens to hang out. The youth centre here is too small." A hospital and repairs to the road are also on her list.

David Chocolate-Zoe of Rae-Edzo thinks a youth club is important for the community.

"The younger generation is growing up and they have no identity," he said.

"There's no arts and crafts centre for painting, sewing and stuff. It will create jobs."

Krista Mantla of Rae-Edzo also identified a need for new facilities.

"The Sportsplex is really run down," she said, and "a treatment centre because there's a lot of drinking here."

Gabriel Apples of Gameti said "a lot of people need a house, and the school is kind of small."

Mary Adele Chocolate of Gameti also pointed to housing and a youth centre.

"Young people don't have enough to do today. There's a pool hall but it's not operating very well. We need something for the kids to hang out."

Alfred Laboline of Wekweti lamented that "there is nothing to do. We need a basketball court. We need more games."

Mary Adele Football of Wekweti suggested "a safe playground with a fence; a mechanic with experience with furnaces, and a new school. "We only have Grade 1 to 9. We need our school to go up to Grade 12. Our kids are getting out of hand when we send them out."
