Yellowknife (June 17/05) - Gayla Meredith has received many teaching awards, but now she's earning national recognition for her writing.

The Canadian Science Writer's Association will present Meredith with the 2004 Science in Society youth category book award at its annual conference in Jasper this weekend.

The honour recognizes Meredith's self-published children's science book, Canada's Northern Diamonds... From Rocks to Riches.

The educational book developed from the information Meredith gathered for her Grade 3 classes at Range Lake North school.

Meredith won't have to skip any classes to accept her award. She is on sabbatical to work with the NWT Literacy Council.

She may be out of the classroom but she's still working closely with young writers.

Meredith is helping some of her students write, illustrate and publish a book that took hours of classroom co-operation.

Diamond Fever tells the story of a South African child who moves to Yellowknife.

"The dedication and commitment these students showed throughout this project is inspiring," said Meredith.

Diamond Fever launches next week after Meredith returns from Jasper.

Some of the young authors will be available to sign copies at The Book Cellar from 1:30-2:30 p.m. on June 25.
