Woman battered at house party

Yellowknife (June 15/05) - A woman who repeatedly kicked an acquaintance so hard she left shoe prints on her face and arms was sentenced to 60 days in jail, June 7.

Susanna Beyonnie was one of two women charged after another woman was beaten for nearly 15 minutes in the bathroom of a Yellowknife home March 5, while a house party raged on just meters away.

"Basically (the victim) was being tortured," said Judge Robert Gorin.

Beyonnie, 22, pleaded guilty to a single count of assault causing bodily harm during the brief appearance in territorial court. In addition to the jail term, Gorin placed Beyonnie on probation for one year and barred her from having contact with the victim.

Crown attorney Jonathan Burke told the court the woman yelled "Stop, you are going to kill me" only to have one of the women respond "I don't care."

The attack only ended when a friend of the victim burst through the bathroom door. The victim's face was badly bruised, Burke said. She also suffered from headaches and had trouble swallowing a week after the beating.

The other woman charged with the beating did not enter a plea and is expected back in court later this month.
