Iqaluit (June 13/05) - Leona Aglukkaq sees her move from Finance to Health minister as a way to help her constituents, not a demotion.
The change came as Premier Paul Okalik shuffled his cabinet last week, divvying out new roles and responsibilities to a number of ministers.
David Simailak, formerly Minister of Economic Development and Transportation, takes over the Finance portfolio from Aglukkaq. Okalik said Simailak's business background will help draw capital to the territory.
"Who's better at attracting investment than a businessman?" Okalik asked.
The announcement came shortly after a three-day retreat in Resolute, where cabinet members discussed plans for the future.
With the most recent session of the legislature over, Okalik said it was time for change.
"It was a good time to reflect and see where we're at and where we're going," he said.
Aglukkaq said she looks forward to taking on what's considered by many to be the most demanding cabinet position.
"Health is much more challenging than Finance," she said. "When I ran as MLA, I did not run for any title. I ran to serve Nunavummiut."
Olayuk Akesuk takes charge of the Nunavut Housing Corporation, on top of his existing duties over Environment and the Worker's Compensation Board.
Okalik said the debt Akesuk currently owes the Housing Corporation is no reason for him to not take on the extra responsibility.
"He's paying it off," he said. "He's a good role model for all people who owe debts to the housing commission."
Other changes include moving former Health Minister Levinia Brown to the ministry of Community and Government Services.
Peter Kilabuk takes on the role of House Leader, formerly occupied by Aglukkaq, and Minister of Economic Development and Transportation. Louis Tapardjuk, Ed Picco and Okalik retain their existing portfolios.
