Standoff suspect remains in custody

Iqaluit (May 09/05) - The man arrested after an eight-hour standoff with police that led to the evacuation of an Iqaluit neighbourhood April 27 and the closure of three schools appeared in court last week.

Ahmie Michael, 19, faces four firearms-related offences. His case was adjourned until July 5, when he will appear for Crown election. The prosecutor will then decide whether to proceed by summary conviction or as an indictable offence.

Michael was serving a conditional sentence for past charges when he was arrested.

Those charges can't be revealed because of a publication ban.

He was ordered to remain in custody until his next court appearance. earance.
