Yellowknife (May 06/05) - Nineteen sailors from HMCS Yellowknife will visit the capital next week, most for the first time.

Ship sponsor and official 'Mom' of the crew, Pat McMahon, said the stay will be a mix of work and play.

The sailors will drop in on schools and the Side Door, put up a shed for the Salvation Army, visit the Legion and get familiar with the city.

"We want them to see as much as possible while they are here," she said.

Ragged Ass Road and Franklin Avenue identify various hallways aboard the HMCS Yellowknife and items such as stuffed seals decorate the ship's walls, McMahon said.

McMahon has been on the ship many times, and attended the launch and naming in Halifax eight years ago.

HMCS Yellowknife:

  • 55.3 metres long.

  • 11.3 metres wide.

  • 970 tonnes with a full load.

  • It was christened on June 5, 1997.

  • It serves as part of Canada's Pacific Fleet.

  • The ship's crest features a raven holding a miner's powder knife symbolizing gold mining.
