Fort Simpson (May 20/05) - Five students with the Aurora College learning centre in Fort Simpson wrapped up practicums at various workplaces in the community last week.

From April 18-May 13, the students trained in office settings.

Yvonne Browning sat at her appointed desk at Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA) as a corporate service clerk.

"This is more like a refresher for me. I have been working within offices such as this for quite a few years. This isn't new to me, but I do welcome the experience with open arms," Browning, a seasoned office worker said.

She enjoyed working with MACA because it taught her about the department's programs such as community governance, sports and recreation, and community planning and development, she said.

At the Liidlii Kue First Nation office around the corner, Cheryl Cli was learning the ropes as a data entry clerk. She said the office administration program has been worthwhile.

"I will be utilizing my work experience and the confidence that I'm gaining towards future self-employment," Cli said with a broad smile.

Merle Snider served as a clerk and receptionist at Parks Canada. In addition to regular office duties, she assisted in slide scanning and labelling, typing chapters on climatology and limnology and typing up Resource Descriptive Analyses (RDA).

She also booked sightseeing reservations for out-of-town guests. A few of the places of interests for the tourists are Virginia Falls, Nahanni and Rabbit Kettle.

"What I am really keen on doing is field work," Snider said. "Parks is offering summer employment for students as park interpreters with training provided. I will be applying based on eligibility. This would be my dream job, if I'm accepted."
