Dry grads back on

Yellowknife (Apr 27/05) - High school graduation organizers welcomed new liquor regulations that will allow students to celebrate alcohol-free grad parties at bars and pool halls - activities that were suddenly banned last year.

The Liquor Licensing Board lifted a provision last week that barred anyone under 19 from entering an establishment with a liquor license - even if alcohol was not being served during the celebration.

"Historically, students have enjoyed these venues. It's nice to have that option again," said Colleen McDonald, vice-principal of St. Patrick high school and a graduation organizer.

After years of issuing permits for so-called dry grads, the liquor board realized in the summer of 2004 that it did not have the authority to grant the requests.

Board chair Don Kindt said members immediately began to discuss amending the provision - a process that took nearly eight months.

"The regulations were very restrictive," said Kindt.

The amendment will allow minors to attend dry grads, but also weddings, sports banquets and band practices, Kindt said.
