Ottawa (Apr 20/05) - Nunavut Sivuniksavut (NS) students were given a personal and political-history tour of Parliament this past week under the guidance of Nunavut's first Inuk member of Parliament, Peter Ittinuar.

The day-long tour included a meeting with the Speaker of the House, Peter Milliken, and a chance to view Question Period from the Speaker's Gallery.

The students were present when current Nunavut MP Nancy Karetak-Lindell honoured NS for its 20th anniversary in the House of Commons.

"The NS program has recently added a second year and has, over the years, evolved into an academic transitional period which teaches youth about the social-and-political road that leads to Nunavut, and prepares them for future leadership roles," said Lindell.

"Young Inuit walk away more secure in knowing more about their own history and their rightful place in Nunavut, Canada and abroad."
