Broughton Island (Apr 18/05) - Laila Alookie knows a thing or two about sewing traditional clothes.

She should: her mother is known around town for her skilful assembly of beautiful seal skin dresses and mitts.

Alookie is one student who will advance into the Historica Heritage Fair territorial finals for the class project she did on Inuit clothing.

"It was my favourite topic," she said.

Alookie compared old techniques of sewing with ivory or fishbones to the use of stainless steel needles today, and animal skins to modern fabrics.

Snipping out old pictures from magazines to glue on to her display board was her favourite part, she said.

Classmate Ann Sanguyu will also advance to the territorials for her project on throatsinging. Judges across the territory will pick five finalists based on websites made for each contender.

Schools in Iqaluit, Arviat, Chesterfield and Resolute are also competing. The Nunavut finalists will fly to Saskatoon for the national finals.
