Cyril Fyfe's parting gift

Yellowknife (Mar 25/05) - Cyril Fyfe left Yellowknife for the last time early Monday evening, sustained by a life support system.

"By 3 p.m. Tuesday his heart was beating in another body," his father Robert Fyfe said Thursday, then paused to regain his composure.

It was the final gift from the 41-year-old firefighter who his father remembers as "a good provider, not elaborate, but he always met his family's needs."

To Fyfe's daughter Jolene, "he was the best guy in the world."

To his sons - Garrett, 12, and Colton, 10 - Cyril was a guide to the outdoors, always ready to take them fishing.

"He loved the outdoors, his family, the firehall and going fishing," Robert Fyfe said.

Raised in Yellowknife, Cyril was the youngest of Robert and Ethel Fyfe's three children.

"He was really laid back, even as a boy," said Fyfe.

"Nothing frustrated him and he didn't seem to have a worry in the world."

Fyfe said his son "always made the right decision at the right time, especially on the job where he had to analyze a situation and act quickly. He wouldn't have made lieutenant without that."

Cyril Fyfe was a fireman for 18 years, "and that's about all he ever talked about," his father said.

"Whenever we came up to visit he would always take us to the firehall to show off new equipment, whether it was a pumper, a ladder truck or the rescue unit. His radio was never off his hip, even when he was off duty, he liked to know what was going on."

Cyril Fyfe's funeral will be held Monday, March 28 at 2 p.m. at the Yellowknife Community Arena.

A funeral was held Thursday in Calgary for Kevin Olson, who died fighting the fire alongside Fyfe.

Deputy fire chief Darcy Hernblad, senior firefighter Craig Halifax, Mayor Gord Van Tighem, and city administrator Max Hall, were among those who represented the city at Olson's funeral.

A memorial service is planned for both Fyfe and Olson at 1 p.m. on Tuesday March 29 at the Yellowknife Community Arena.
