Yellowknife (Mar 23/05) - Yellowknifers are pulling together in a variety of ways - including wearing black ribbons - now that a second firefighter, Cyril Fyfe, has succumbed to his injuries after the March 17 building supplies fire.

Firefighter Olson died shortly after the collapse. Eighteen-year veteran and longtime Yellowknifer Fyfe died the afternoon of March 21, after nearly five days on life support.

City staff are wearing black ribbons pinned with a mini gold knife symbolic of Yellowknife in memory of the fallen firefighters, said city clerk Debbie Euchner.

A small number of ribbons were also available to the public at the city's reception desk on March 21.

Businesses such as First Air, Subway, and the Yellowknife Co-op, as well as Yellowknife residents have been taking care of Fyfe's family members' needs as they waited by the firefighter's bedside, Mayor Gord Van Tighem said.

More than 100 e-mails have been sent to condolences@yellowknife.ca. This does not include messages sent directly to the fire hall.

Other people are sending flowers. The city is asking people to direct phone calls, flowers, and other memorials to City Hall.

Those wishing to donate to the Kevin Olson memorial fund can visit the Yellowknife TD Canada Trust branch.

Ten representatives from the city will be at Olson's funeral service on Thursday in Calgary, Van Tighem said.

A Yellowknife memorial has not yet been planned.

"It's something that you learn about in training, but you hope never to have to do," the mayor said of the tragedy.
