Kitikmeot (Feb 14/05) - Kitikmeot Internet users were asked to change their passwords after Polarnet received an anonymous phone call about stolen user names and passwords last month.

"We heard that one person got a list of user names and passwords," said Darrell Ohokannoak, manager of Polarnet in Cambridge Bay. "After we did some investigating we found out they didn't."

To be on the safe side, customers are advised to change their passwords.

"The Internet world is the most insecure world," said Ohokannoak. "If people can hack into FBI files or the bank, I don't see why they couldn't get into your Internet account."

Jayko Neeveecheak, who works for KIA/Polarnet in Taloyoak, said stolen passwords are a big deal, but he is not concerned about the safety of his account today.

"I just changed my password," he said.

Matt Gee, a Polarnet customer in Gjoa Haven, said "It's like identity theft.

"Someone could have logged me on for days and days," said Gee.
