Police seize drugs worth $44,000
The latest seizure has the RCMP feeling they are making a difference in the drug trade in Hay River.
"From our perspective, we've been making a significant dent in drug trafficking in the community," Const. Michael Carter said.
Over the last year, there have been several drug busts involving large amounts of crack cocaine or marijuana in the area.
As the result of a joint investigation with police in Edmonton and Fort Smith, Hay River RCMP located a vehicle suspected of containing crack cocaine on Feb. 4. Four individuals inside the vehicle were detained and 21.5 grams of crack cocaine were discovered.
Further investigation led the RCMP to search a residence where 161.5 grams of crack cocaine were seized, along with various items used in the distribution of the drug, such as scales and wrapping material.
Carter said the origin of the drug in southern Canada is not known. However, it is believed Hay River was the final destination.
When asked if the arrests involved members of a drug ring, Carter replied, "I wouldn't go as far as to say it's an organization, but that hasn't been ruled out."
The constable explained the involvement of Edmonton and Fort Smith police was a sharing of information on the movements of the suspects over the last year.
The investigation has identified several other individuals connected to the distribution of cocaine in Hay River and further charges may result, Carter said.
Charges of trafficking have been laid against Hay River residents Shannon Whitford, 33, Annette Whitford, 31, August Poitras, 37, and Darlene Ross, 32, and Fort Resolution resident Henry Beaulieu, 41.
Annette Whitford and Poitras have been remanded in custody to await a Feb. 28 court appearance. The others have been released, with Shannon Whitford to appear in court on Feb. 28 and Ross and Beaulieu on March 21.
