Kraus a global citizen

Fort Simpson (Jan 07/05) - While leafing through the 75th anniversary edition of Canadian Geographic magazine, Karen Haukaas paused when she unexpectedly noticed a familiar face staring back at her.

"'Hey that's Mary Kraus!'" Haukaas said. "That's kind of cool."

Kraus's image was slotted in on the bottom left-hand corner of the page. The picture was one of several accompanying an article on global citizens, celebrating how Canada is home to people of many races and cultures.

Kraus and her husband Gus, who is now deceased, lived for many years in Nahanni country, where they trapped and prospected. She is now a resident at the long-term care home in Fort Simpson.

Robert Postma, a nurse practitioner currently employed in the Yukon, took the recently published photograph of Kraus while he was working in Fort Simpson in July 2002. He caught sight of her at the Canada Day parade clutching a miniature flag and he knew he wanted to capture the image.

"I just couldn't resist taking her picture," he noted. In the photo, she is wearing her customary red shawl. The reflection of the Canadian flag she was holding can be discerned in the bottom right-hand corner of her glasses.

Haukaas said she wants to give Kraus a copy of the magazine.

Postma, who has been working sporadically in the Deh Cho since 1997, is due to return to Fort Simpson this month. He was one of the winners in Up Here magazine's annual photo contest, as well as the Show Us Your Canada photo contest. His dazzling Northern Lights prints are often available at local bazaars.

He said he was caught off guard when his picture of Kraus showed up in Canadian Geographic. He is represented by a stock photo agency and never knows when a landscape or portrait that he's recorded may appear in a publication, he added.
