Yellowknife (Jan 21/05) - A Yellowknife man has been charged with attempted murder after another man was slashed early Tuesday morning near a downtown apartment complex.

Police were called to the Ravenscourt Apartments, off 51st Avenue, at about 7 a.m. Jan. 18, where they discovered a bleeding man and a 10-metre blood trail extending from the lobby into the parking lot. Police arrested a suspect shortly after arriving at the building.

Investigators believe a man was slashed just outside the apartment building.

Despite the blood trail, the victim's injuries were not considered life threatening, said RCMP Sgt. Mike Brandford.

Brandford said there were no witnesses to the attack.

The victim, who police wouldn't identify, was taken to Stanton Territorial Hospital and released a short time later. Brandford declined to say where on his body the man was slashed.

Investigators believe the victim lived in the apartment building, but declined to discuss any possible motivation for the attack.

A search by uniformed officers and members of the General Investigation Division uncovered two weapons Brandford said were used in the attack, but he declined to say what they were.

"The case is still under investigation," he said.

In addition to the attempted murder charge, Mohammed Mohamoud Ahmed, 40, faces one count each of assault with a weapon and possession of a prohibited weapon.

Ahmed was scheduled to appear in front of a justice of the peace Wednesday afternoon for a bail hearing.
