Yellowknife (Jan 21/05) - A preliminary hearing has been set for Eli Ulayuk, the man accused of killing Yellowknife parole officer Louise Pargeter last fall.

The hearing is scheduled to begin June 20 and could last 10 days, said Crown Attorney Sadie Bond.

At that time, a judge will decide if there is enough evidence to order Ulayuk to stand trial on a charge of first degree murder.

Ulayuk, 36, was arrested in October after police discovered Pargeter's body in a Range Lake apartment.

His appearance in territorial court Tuesday morning was brief, and like his first court session in November, came with heavy security.

Ulayuk was remanded into police custody after the hearing.

Pargeter's death rocked Yellowknife and grabbed headlines across the country.

Ulayuk was convicted of manslaughter in connection with a 1988 killing in Iglulik. He served eight years in prison and was on parole at the time of Pargeter's death.

A joint investigation by the National Parole Board and the Correctional Service of Canada is investigating his release.
