Inuvik (Dec 06/04) - Volunteering means different things for different people.

For Ken Crocker, a five-year volunteer with the Inuvik Fire Department, it means possibly making a big difference in someone's life if his skills are needed.

"It's a good feeling that you get when you are helping someone else," Crocker said of his potentially life saving role.

Having no prior experience as a firefighter did not deter Crocker -- who is now a lieutenant -- from joining the team.

"It's hard work, but it's not thankless," he said.

"We get community support for the things we do here and we get a lot of interested youth here when we have our open house," he said.

His family and friends are also supportive of his role in the department, where he can be found between eight to 10 hours a week at times."People understand that there are times when I have to take off at short notice," he said.

Crocker said he feels fortunate to have met many nice people along the way.

"A lot of members come and go, but I enjoy it."

Volunteering his firefighting skills is something he plans on continuing.

"It's the feeling that you can really see that you are contributing to the community."

He recommends the work to anyone who has considered joining the department.

"I'd encourage anyone. The doors are open for any person to check it out and see what it's all about.

"It's a great experience," said Crocker.
