Sweet tooth alert!

Yellowknife (Dec 31/04) - If you're prone to drooling gluttony when it comes to sweets, read on at your own risk.

Yellowknife saw what could quite possibly be the largest display of cookies this side of Santa's Workshop on Dec. 15, thanks to Barb Bromley, who hosted her 50th annual Cookie Party.

Gooey chocolate treats, coconut and cherry delights, nutty and nougatey morsels and even cheddar cheese shortbreads were all turned out for what has become the social event of the season.

"It's a great way to start off the Christmas season," said Bromley.

More than 90 Yellowknifers turned out this year to "swap" cookies, spread some cheer and, of course, nibble samples of the treats. To ensure variety and quantity, each year guests bring their own favourite treats for the party, and return home with an assortment.

"Most people bring at least two dozen and if they bring two dozen, they take two dozen home," said Bromley.

That's right, do the math and you'll see there were literally thousands of cookies waiting to be dunked and devoured at Bromley's party.

After inheriting the hostess duties in 1954, Bromley's event has grown every year. In fact, it's been held at her daughter's house the last 25 years to accommodate the increasing number of guests.

One year, Bromley joked, the narrow streets of Latham Island were so crowded municipal enforcement officers actually ticketed some of the guests.

"I persuaded the bylaws the next day to forgive them," she said, laughing. Undoubtedly, some cookies were involved in her "persuasion".

"I don't know where 50 years have gone, but it's been a lot of fun," said Bromley, who hopes the tradition will live on with her daughters and granddaughters in the years to come.
