Jail report will be made public

Yellowknife (Dec 01/04) - A government investigation into human resource practices at the North Slave Correctional Centre is scheduled to be made public Friday, the Justice department announced last week.

The report is expected to outline a host of concerns raised by correctional officers who complained working conditions at the jail are unsafe, overtime hours are excessive and management consistently silenced critical employees.

A copy of the document was provided to the department some time last week and officials are in the process of reviewing its conclusions and preparing a response, said a spokesperson.

The review was conducted on behalf of the Justice Department by government employees outside of the unit.

A guard, who requested anonymity, said almost all jail employees received a questionnaire and many had sit-down interviews with investigators.

Justice Minister Charles Dent told Yellowknifer earlier this month that the review would help address the concerns raised by the guards.
