Back in the bush, away from the foxes

Yellowknife (Nov 05/04) - So I moved my camp across the river. I feel much better now.

The foxes have been leaving my snares alone -- for a little while at least. I'm just wondering how long it will take before they sniff my trails out. They're eating better than me these days, it seems.

Gotta hand it to them, the little buggers are better bunny hunters than I'll ever be.

I want to start my column this week with a joke my friend told me the other day when I asked him to tell me a story about Inuvik back in the good old days.

It goes something like this: One day a guy was walking down the street when he noticed two tourists standing in front of the Catholic church.

"Excuse me sir, could you tell me why they built this church to look like an igloo?" the visitor inquired.

"I don't really know, but I bet my uncle could tell you," the man replied as he turned to his uncle standing beside him.

"Well, there's a reason for everything in this world, but the real reason for that shape is because those Western Arctic people are sharp as tacks, you know. They built it that way so the Devil can never corner you in there!"

I heard that one when I was walking up the river the other day looking for wood. Those jigglers have the best stories.

Can't vote

Anyways, I'm waiting with baited breath on the upcoming election in the Twin Lakes riding. I can't vote because technically I live on the Boot Lake side of things.

But with no real physical address, I should be able to vote wherever I want in Inuvik. I'll have to check up on that one. Maybe I'll give Floyd Roland a call and see what he says.

And by the way Floyd, while I'm at it, I just want to mention that your credibility is fine with me.

Don't worry what those other guys are squawking about (increased airport security in the capital).

They are just jealous because they need something to complain about. If it's not one thing, it's another. Typical politics, eh?

They should be focusing on devolution instead of bashing a bomb detector that Yellowknife needs to keep up with the rest of the world.

The feds will probably foot most of the bill anyway.

But enough is enough. By the time you read this we will have another Big Brother south of the border to contend with. I'm not making any predictions, but....
