Fort Simpson (Nov 26/04) - The task of helping students make the best decisions for their future is something career counsellor Tom Charbonneau takes very seriously.

"I'm here to assist kids with anything they need to further their education," Charbonneau said from his office in the Samuel Hearne secondary school library. "This includes providing information on colleges and universities, trades options, getting financial aid and, of course, helping with any paperwork involved."

Though it's relatively early in the school year, prospective graduates looking to continue their education should begin applying to colleges and universities in early spring. He said there are a lot of scholarships, grants and bursaries available for the taking.

For those who don't plan on attending a post-secondary institution, Charbonneau says his services include, "help with resume and cover letter writing."

For students interested in learning a trade, "what I want people to be aware of are the apprenticeship opportunities," Charbonneau said.

He also hopes other businesses will follow the lead of Rocky's Plumbing, which has agreed to introduce students to the contracting business during the upcoming 2005 career week.

"There are a lot of choices and I want students to know that I'm here to help them with whatever they need," he said.
