Fort Smith (Nov 22/04) - Fort Smith residents have opened their hearts and wallets for a seriously ill child and her family.

Five-year-old Daynee Paulette was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour in October. Since then, her family has seen an outpouring of concern and financial support from the community.

Daynee has been receiving treatment in Edmonton since October.

The little girl is the daughter of Smith's Landing First Nation Chief Jerry Paulette and his wife, Jayme.

Residents of Fort Smith have launched several fundraising efforts to help the family with expenses.

"We're very thankful to everyone who has helped," says Daynee's aunt, Delphine Paulette.

"At a time like this, you're proud to be from Fort Smith."

She says Jerry and Jayme are overwhelmed by the support.

So far, over $14,000 has been raised, and more is being collected.

One of the fundraising organizers is Smith's Landing finance officer Betty Tourangeau, who placed donation containers around town.

A benefit concert was also held. As well, over $1,000 was donated by residents in Fort Resolution.

Along with helping with the expenses of Daynee's family in Edmonton, Tourangeau says, "Everyone is praying for her."

Delphine says her niece is not currently in hospital, but living with her parents in an Edmonton apartment.

"The only time they want her in a hospital is if she has to be there," she said.

Daynee takes chemotherapy treatment every day in pill form, and she undergoes radiation treatment five days a week.

Delphine says the last radiation treatment will be on Dec. 20, meaning the family will not be home for Christmas since it will be too soon to travel.

After the treatment is finished, it will be a few weeks before they know whether it has helped.

"We're all hoping the treatment will help her and make the tumour smaller," Delphine says.

Tourangeau says those wishing to help the Paulettes can make donations at any Bank of Montreal branch through the account of the Smith's Landing Benevolent Society.
