Hay River (Nov 22/04) - A Hay River man has been sentenced to a total of 10 months in jail, two years probation and a 10-year firearm prohibition following a standoff with police.

The sentence includes three months for breach of an undertaking as a result of a Sept. 9 barricading incident in Hay River.

Kenneth Tyrone Laliberte, 33, was armed with a shotgun when he barricaded himself inside a house where he once lived. Following a tip that Laliberte was at the home, police found the locks tampered with and furniture placed against the inside of doors. They managed to get the locks undone and forced in the doors.

Unsure if anyone was still in the house, three Mounties entered with guns drawn and found Laliberte with a loaded sawed-off .410 calibre shotgun. He was arrested without a shot being fired.

Laliberte was also sentenced to one month in jail for a Jan. 2 assault; one month for an assault on April 25; two months for uttering threats on May 7; one month for an assault and two months for breach of an undertaking, both on Sept. 5. All sentences are to be served consecutively.

Laliberte appeared in territorial court in Yellowknife on Nov. 12.
