Hold up at convenience store

Inuvik (Nov 19/04) - It only lasted 30 seconds, but that was enough for a woman to get away with cash from the Corner Store, according to police.

At approximately 7:20 p.m., Inuvik RCMP responded to a call from the convenience store located at Dolphin Street and Kingmingya Road. An employee at the store reported that a young female wearing dark clothing and concealing her face had just robbed the store at gunpoint and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.

"The guy (working) did the correct thing by giving the money," said Cpl. Merle Carpenter.

"The whole thing was over in less than 30 seconds and nobody was hurt."

Though word that the gun used in the robbery was a plastic replica, Carpenter insisted the weapon was real.

He noted that instances of armed robbery were rare for Inuvik.

Carpenter would not comment on whether the crime was drug-related, but said police were following several leads.

Nazem Elkadri, owner of the Corner Store, did not want to comment on the matter.

Anybody with information about the robbery is asked to call the Inuvik RCMP.
